Workplace Eye Care & Safety Glasses FAQs
Driving Eye Health FAQs
Are we required to provide eye tests for employees who use display screen equipment (DSE)?
Yes, under the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations, employers must provide an eye test if an employee regularly uses a computer or display screen for work.
How often should employees using display screens have an eye test?
It is recommended that DSE users have an eye test every two years, but it may vary depending on the individual’s needs. If an employee experiences vision issues, they should request another test sooner.
Do we need to cover the cost of glasses for employees who need them for screen use?
If the eye test confirms that glasses are needed specifically for DSE use, you are required to contribute towards the cost of basic corrective lenses.
Which industries require employees to wear safety glasses?
Industries where employees are exposed to risks such as flying debris, chemicals, dust, or radiation, including manufacturing, construction, laboratories, and engineering, require safety eyewear.
Can employees get prescription safety glasses for work?
Yes, employees who require vision correction can receive prescription safety glasses that comply with safety standards for their industry.
What safety standards should workplace eyewear meet in the UK?
Workplace eyewear must meet EN 166 standards, which ensure adequate protection against impacts, chemical splashes, or UV exposure, depending on the job requirements.
Do you offer plastic frames for industries that require them?
Yes, we offer plastic safety frames that comply with industry standards for sectors where metal frames are not permitted, such as food processing or electrical work.
Do we need to provide eye tests for employees who drive company vehicles?
While not legally required, it’s best practice for employers to provide regular corporate eye tests for employees who drive as part of their job. This ensures that they meet DVLA eyesight requirements and helps maintain safe driving standards.
What are the legal eyesight requirements for employees who drive for work?
For employees who drive for work, they must be able to read a car number plate made after 1 September 2001 from 20 metres, with or without corrective lenses. Employees must also have adequate peripheral vision, which can be assessed during an eye test.
Can poor eyesight lead to driving penalties or disqualification for our employees?
Yes, if employees’ eyesight does not meet the legal standards, they may face fines, points on their licence, or even disqualification from driving. Ensuring employees meet the DVLA’s standards through workplace eye health checks can help prevent this.
How can offering eye tests for company drivers benefit our business?
Offering regular corporate vision assessments ensures employees meet the legal requirements for driving, reduces the risk of accidents, and demonstrates your commitment to employee safety. It also helps with compliance in case of insurance claims or audits.
Do we offer on-site vision screening for company drivers?
Yes, we provide mobile corporate eyecare services, including on-site vision screening for businesses, ensuring that your drivers meet the necessary eyesight standards and reducing the need for off-site appointments.
How often should company drivers undergo eye tests?
It’s recommended that company drivers have an eye test at least every two years. However, if employees drive frequently or at night, more regular eye checks may be necessary to maintain safety and legal compliance.

What should we do if a company driver’s eyesight is no longer suitable for driving?
If an employee’s eyesight deteriorates and no longer meets DVLA standards, they must inform both you and the DVLA. Regular corporate eye health checks help identify vision issues early, allowing you to take appropriate action.
